Mat footing refers to a large and continuous thick slab that provides support to the numerous columns and walls included in a complete structure or a large part of the structure. A mat footing is very effective if the pressure of the soil is poor as well as the columns and walls are very adjacent so that individual footings may overlay or nearly meet each other. Mat foundations offer great help in minimizing the distinctive settlements on non-homogeneous soils or if huge variation occur in the loads on the individual columns and the loads of the building should be overlaid a large area.
