METHODS OF CURING CONCRETE

CONCRETE CURING:
Curing refers to the method useful for safeguarding the moisture of concrete surface and improving the hydration of cement. The physical properties of concrete is fully maintained by the hydration of cement. Improper curing can lead to weaken the strength of concrete as well as cracking of concrete.

CONCRETE CURING PROCESSES:
1. SHADING:
This process is applied to lock the dehydration of water in the concrete surface. It also safeguards the surface against heat, wind etc. In cold climates, it protects the concrete from being frozen by conserving heat of hydration of cement.

2. COVERING THE SURFACE WITH WATERPROOF PAPER:
Under this process, a cover with wet gunny bags or waterproof papers is provided over the concrete surface to get rid of water loss as well as safeguard the concrete so that it can?t be damaged again. This process will be proved very effective for curing of concrete slabs and pavements.

3. SPRINKLING WATER:
Under this method, nozzles are used to sprinkle water on the concrete at right gaps. This method is not so recognized as it becomes problematic to maintain the concrete surface to be moisted all the time.

4. PONDING:
Ponding is mostly recognized process for curing of floors, slabs, pavements etc. Under this process, a cover is given with moist wrapper over concrete surface for 24 hours. Later, the covers are then withdrawn and lesser amount of clay puddles are provided around all the area. Then water is stuffed for final curing.

5. MEMBRANE CURING:
Under this process, various waterproof membranes or sealing compounds like bitumen emulsion, wax, rubber latex emulsion, water repellant, plastic films etc. are used to cover the concrete surface. The membrane defends the loss of water from concrete. It is observed that membrane curing for 28 days provide similar strength to two weeks moist curing.

6. STEAM CURING:
Steam curing is accomplished by raising the temperature of concrete in wet condition. This process facilitates the concrete to get its complete strength in a short time, therefore, curing is also completed in short time. Steam curing is essential for developing precast members.
